CYC TURKEY BOWL REGATTA & DISTRICT 22 GRAND PRIX SERIES FINALE November 19-20, 2022

Perfect day for racing (photo courtesy of John Beaver, from ashore)

CYC Seattle’s annual Turkey Bowl Regatta kicked off with 34 ILCAs (four 4.7s, twenty-two 6s, eight 7s) sharing the course with RS Aeros, FJ, 420, 505 and Star classes. A total of 76 boats competed. This regatta also served as the finale of the ILCA DISTRICT 22 Grand Prix Series 2022 sponsored by West Coast Sailing.

CYC Seattle’s RC skillfully managed to get 5 races completed on Saturday for each fleet as they simultaneously and continuously started and finished fleets. The light wind on Sunday allowed for only 3 races before retiring for the day. After Saturday racing CYC welcomed us with hot chili and refreshments.

A steady 10-12 mph northerly greeted sailors on Saturday, and in spite of overnight freezing temperatures the sunny blue sky lead to nearly 50 degrees by mid afternoon and a perfect day of sailing. On Sunday the wind was a light southerly and slightly overcast. Racing started at 11 AM on both days amidst a rising tide that swung about 4’ between 11 AM and 1pm and then dropping by the end of racing at 3PM. The swing made a difference on both days, for better or worse, as did the late afternoon wind moving more northeasterly on Saturday and southwesterly on Sunday. David Brink, winner of the ILCA 7 group will be honored with his name engraved for the second time on the Jay Winberg Perpetual Trophy which was established in 2004, and Dave first won in 2014.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OVERALL 2022 TOP FINISHERS of the West Coast Sailing sponsored ILCA District 22 Grand Prix Series

The 2022 ILCA DISTRICT 22 GRAND PRIX this year was a six regatta series which kicked-off in April at the CYC Puget Sound Spring Regatta and concluded at the CYC Turkey Bowl a few weeks ago.

Sponsored by West Coast Sailing, the District 22 Grand Prix is structured to reward ILCA members who participate in multiple ILCA regattas throughout the District (WA, OR, ID, MT). Winners were based on a high point scoring system, accumulating points from finishes in all eligible regattas. My thanks to Dave Jursik and CGRA for managing the registration and scoring at cgra.org.

This year, the regattas included in the series were the CYC Seattle PSSR, Vancouver Lake Sailing Club’s DeBenedetti, CGRA Wind, CGRA CGOD, Sail Sand Point Octoberfest, and the CYC Seattle Turkey Bowl. We appreciate and thank all the clubs who hosted these regattas.
